Treatment for nail fungus available today still has many shortcomings. The standard treatment for fungal nail infections is Lamisil. Drugs containing terbinafine is the first line for treating fungal nail infection. However, these drugs can cause damage to the liver, so liver enzymes should be obtained every 6 weeks. Some topical treatments are proven to be safe from side effects. However, the effectiveness of topical treatments cannot be equated with oral medication. Nail Fungus Treatment with high technology, laser treatment, has a high cure rate. But, the cost of toe nail fungus laser treatment is very high and not covered by insurance. Herbal remedies for onychomycosis is also being conducted. Although some herbal medicines are proven to cure nail fungal infection, the effectiveness of home remedies such as tea tree oil is not higher than oral medication. New treatments for nail fungus continue to be developed to overcome difficulties in the treatment of fungal nail infection.August 25th, 2011 Posted in toenail fungus treatments
Today, Scientist is focusing to build new treatment for toenail fungus.
What are new treatments for toenail fungus which are being developed by scientist?
They are topical IDP-108, Bifonazole cream, Posaconazole, topical AN2690, Mycova topical nail lacquer and NB-002. These drugs have not been marketed because it has not passed all phases of clinical trial. Several drugs are currently in phase III clinical trial so that a few moments longer are marketed if they qualify in that phase.
AN2690 is a new treatment for toenail fungus developed by Anacor.
In a phase I clinical trials, AN2690 is shown to have the ability to penetrate the nail that is stronger than penlac nail lacquer. This topical medication also has strong antifungal activity because it can inhibit the fungal enzymes which used by fungi to grow. In this phase I clinical trials AN2690 also proven not to cause systemic side effects.
Apricus Bio Company also participated in the development of new treatments for toenail fungus. They developed Mycova nail lacquer. Mycova is containing terbinafine equipped with NexACT technology. This combination is proven to increase the absorption of the drug into the nail bed. As we have seen so far, the absorption of the drug into the nail coating is the weakness of topical medications. Currently, Mycova already passed phase II clinical trials and is undergoing phase III clinical trials.
In addition to AN2690 and Mycova, there are still some new treatments for toenail fungus are currently undergoing phase III clinical trials. Clinical trials for Bifonazole cream which began in 2008 have now been completed. However, publication of the results of clinical trials for Bifonazole cream has not been published. Participants for clinical trials of topical IDP-108 have been met. A clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of topical IDP-108 is currently ongoing.
Phase II clinical trials for Posaconazole and Topical NB-002 has also been completed but no publication of results of clinical trials, whether the two new treatments for nail fungus is safe when used in healthy subjects.
Hopefully, scientists soon completed phase III clinical trials of new treatments for toenail fungus so that new drugs are more potent and safe can be purchased from the market immediately. However, these newer drugs still must undergo phase IV clinical trials to determine the drug’s safety after a widely circulated in the market. New treatment for toenail fungus is the hope of all people because existing treatments for onychomycosis takes a long time, high cost, and some systemic side effects which are quite dangerous.
